Open in new windowOpen in new windowThe Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has granted final approval to the Camelot Landfill in Lewisville to use contaminated soil as alternative daily cover in its operations. In a letter dated February 6th, TCEQ provided notice of its decision to interested stakeholders. The letter states that interested parties may file a motion to overturn, and have the commission review the Executive Director's approval. Judicial review is also an option, according to the letter.

Camelot seeks to use contaminated soil each day to cover the working face of the landfill, which keeps out air and water, and prevents odor. By using contaminated soil, Camelot saves on costs and picks up an additional revenue stream. The position of local residents in Lewisville has been that Camelot should not be allowed to take on contaminated soil until its existing contamination problems affecting the Trinity River are solved.

Camelot also has a pending permit application to expand the landfill, a move opposed by the City of Lewisville, who is suing Camelot and its owner, the City of Farmers Branch in federal court over the contamination.

The letter also summarizes comments in opposition to the use of contaminated soil, and addresses its rationale in approving the permit in spite of them.
