Open in new windowA crew boring on the East side of SH 121 Business in Lewisville struck a 2" gas line, causing a leak that has caused the Lewisville Fire Department to shut down the highway and evacuate several shopping centers.

Lewisville Fire Chief Tim Tittle said that crews were boring on the East side along the road, and cut through a two-inch gas distribution line. When the crew pulled their drill back, the gas came back out of the hole. Gas was detected in high concentrations in nearby sewers.

Officials set up a command post at the 7-11 store at the Northwest corner of SH 121 and Corporate Drive. They evacuated the Corporate Village, Corporate Park, and Timber Valley shopping centers, and had cut the power to those businesses to avoid any possible ignition sources. Firefighters were keeping a close eye on wind direction.

Workers from the gas company Atmos were on-site and had dug a pit on the West side of SH 121 to intersect the gas line's tap with at 6-inch gas main on that side of the road, but had yet to reach it when we were on the scene. Tittle said that crews were waiting on shoring to avoid cave-ins while working on the line. Crews will attempt to clamp off the leaking line.

At this point, Tittle wouldn't venture a guess at how long it might take, only saying that it could be awhile. We do not currently know who the boring crew was working for.

We will update if we learn any more details.

Update - 1:32 p.m.:
Crews have the gas line shut down. First responders are going to take more readings in the area, and when they show all clear, the police will reopen the roadway and allow the businesses to reopen.
