The recruiting world has learned what Lewisville Farmers football fans have known for the last two years -- Tyrell Shavers is an elite high school wide receiver.

Shavers burst further onto the recruiting scene last weekend with a standout performance at The Opening Dallas -- a regional precursor to The Opening, the country’s most prestigious position-specific drill showcase in the country.

The one-day event, which took place in Coppell last Sunday, featured approximately 400 area football players who were measured, weighed, timed, and led through a variety of drills by former NFL and college coaches and players. The event is designed to mimic the NFL combine, a showcase for draft-eligible college players.

Shavers drew attention mainly by posting the second-fastest time in the 40-yard dash, a wind-aided 4.38 seconds. He also stood out in individual competition against the top area cornerbacks and safeties.

After an unusual two-game losing streak, the Lewisville High School softball team was ready to let out some frustrations. The Lady Broncos from McKinney Boyd were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Lewisville routed Boyd 19-8 at the LHS Killough Campus on Friday night to stay in a fourth-place tie in District 6-6A after a busy week of regularly-scheduled and make-up contests. The Lady Farmers went 2-2 on the week.

Friday night’s win over the last-place Lady Broncos and Monday night’s 4-1 win over first-place Flower Mound bracketed mid-week losses to Plano East (3-1) and Plano West (4-1).

The Lady Farmers (13-3) defeated Flower Mound (12-2) in a rain-out game Monday night. The rivals are second and first in District 6-6A respectively.

Lewisville senior Tommi Goodman was first on base after a walk. Nicole Nelson stepped out of the batter’s box, resulting in a violation.

Later in the first inning, junior Kaylee Rodriquez hit a double allowing Goodman to run home, placing the Lady Farmers on the scoreboard.

Neither team scored again until the fourth inning, when Lewisville earned two more. The Lady Jags scored one, making the game 3-1.

In the seventh inning, Lewisville completed a fourth run to end the game 4-1.

The Lewisville High School softball team has reached the state finals in two of the past three seasons. What it hasn’t been able to accomplish over the same period is a district championship.

Such is the competitive climate in District 6-6A where the Lady Farmers are one of two state-ranked teams, of which neither is even the district’s defending champion.

The Lady Farmers, ranked ninth in the state by the Texas Girls Coaches Association, enter Saturday’s game against Plano West in a three-way tie for second place in district. Their 2-1 record has them in a logjam with 10th-ranked Plano West and Hebron.

Defending district champion Flower Mound sits atop the district with a 4-0 record.

Trenton Sandifer and Jeremiah Taylor led the Lewisville boys basketball team in scoring in nearly every game this season. Their dominance earned them both first-team honors when the District 6-6A all-district accolades were announced earlier this week.

Sandifer and Taylor both averaged 12 points per game during the recently-concluded season. Sandifer, a junior post who was named most valuable player of the preseason Fort Worth ISD holiday tournament, was among the area rebounding leaders with nine per game. Taylor, a senior guard, supplemented his scoring with three assists per game.

“I’m really pleased that both those guys earned that honor because they both worked so hard,” LHS coach Gary Collier said. “Trenton specifically improved so much over his sophomore season. If there was a ‘most improved’ category, he would have probably won it.”

Marcus Jefferson, who dished out 70 assists this season, was named to the second team. The junior point guard will be asked to pick up the scoring and leadership void that will be left due to Taylor’s graduation.
